Bastyr Center for Natural Health
Student Clinician
I have to complete 2 quarters of nutrition clinic practicum at BCNH in order to graduate from the MSN/DPD program at Bastyr University. I believe this has been one of the most valuable experiences from my education thus far. As a student clinician, I conducted assessments of patients with a wide variety of medical conditions then gave recommendations on how to implement dietary changes under the supervision of a RD. In order to prepare for each patient, I researched peer-reviewed literature to provide evidence-based advice. I also would collaborate with other clinicians about the best treatment options for patients. We were trained on using the electronic medical chart note system, Epic, for documenting patient interactions and billing purposes. Overall, this was a very rewarding experience that helped prepare me for a career as a dietitian.

Alere Wellbeing
Wellbeing Coach
As a coach at Alere Wellbeing, I gained valuable counseling skills as well as furthered my knowledge of health-related topics. I was trained in effective counseling techniques to facilitate behavior change. I provided over 3000 evidenced-based interventions to people from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. It was especially rewarding to be a part of the VA Telephone Lifestyle Coaching program, in which I coached veterans on how to make sustainable, healthy lifestyle changes in order to treat or prevent chronic disease. I also worked alongside registered dietitians, which contributed to my desire to pursue a career in nutrition myself.

Wendy Caamano Nutrition
Intern
It has been a privilege to work with Wendy and to learn from her. Since she is the nutritionist for the professional women’s basketball team, Seattle Storm, I had the incredible opportunity to work with the players of the team and give them nutrition education. I met with the players and trainer for the team and discussed what nutrition goals they wanted to meet over the course of the season. Then, I designed and created weekly handouts on various sports nutrition topics, such as hydration and the metabolic window. The players used the handouts as a guide for how to fuel to play their best that season.
I also manage the social media for Wendy’s private practice. It has been enjoyable researching nutrition related topics in order to help bring attention to her practice.
